The history of Tanah Lot started at 16th-century. It was told that Dang Hyang Nirartha who travelled along the south coast of Bali Island, stopped in Tanah Lot. He saw the unique and beautiful rock formation just beside the sea. Then, some local fishermen saw him and offer him gifts and foods. Nirartha was amazed at the kindness of the people. After spending the night and meditated on the rock, he named it as “Tanah Lot”, means rock in the sea. The construction of the temple of Tanah Lot and was part of Balinese mythology for centuries. This temple is one of the seven temples of the sea around the coast of the island of Bali. When the tides is low, we can get close because the temple is connected with the mainland with the rock bridge, but during the high tide of this temple will be on top of the island that floats separated from the mainland. 2. Enjoy the beautiful sunset in Tanah Lot Bali
Facing to the west, we can see the beautiful sunset in Tanah Lot Bali. The best time to visit this place is around at 16.30-18.30. From Denpasar, you need to leave around 15.00 using motorcycle or taxi. The sunset will take place roughly one hour, from the orange-red-blue purple-and then become dark as the night comes.

3. See the sacred snake the keeper of Tanah Lot
In Tanah Lot, we can see Bungarus Candidus, the species of sea snakes are highly venomous and dangerous. It has a circular black and yellow stripped body. This snake was believe as the keeper and savior of Tanah Lot from the devils attack. Despite of its venom, visitors can touch the sacred snake. Local people believe, if we touch the sacred snake and praying to the God, what we want will come true.

4. Join the Odalan Festival
Odalan Festival is celebrated every 210 days, together with other Hinduism Temples. Odalan Festival (Hari Suci Buda Cemeng Langkir) usually held near Galungan and Kuningan Festival. Local people will come together wearing Bali traditional clothes, praying and giving offerings (called melarung) to the sea. Besides that, we also can see traditional Kecak Dance and also local wedding ceremony. For your information, this places is nominated as the second most romantic places for wedding in Indonesia, just after Uluwatu.

5. Buy unique souvenirs or eat traditional cuisine in Tanah Lot

The area leading to Tanah Lot is highly developed and people are required to pay before entering this area. To enter Tanah Lot Temple area, we need to pay 20.000 rupiahs for adult, and 15.000 rupiahs for the children.
How to get there?
Tanah Lot is located about 20 kilometers from Kuta or 15 kilometers from Ngurah Rai Airport and can be reached by car of about 45 minutes. The taxi fare is around 300.000 rupiahs from Kuta or 250.000 from Ngurah Rai Airport. From Ubud it can reached in about 30 to 40 minutes by car. The easiest way to enjoy sunset in Tanah Lot is by joining tours offered in Bali. You can ask your hotel staff about that.
